A new method of measuring the thermal time constant of a junction laser’s active region by using the output light power frequency response is presented. The thermal time constant τ can be calculated from the maximum value of the phase shift which is measured at a lower frequency than the cutoff frequency (1/2πτ). This method is highly suitable for use under high drive current and/or high temperature conditions.
