The effect of illumination on the plastic properties of gallium arsenide crystals is studied experimentally. The illumination is found to reduce the plastic flow stress. The phenomenon is referred to as the negative photoplastic effect. The NPPE and the mean velocity of dislocations are investigated as functions of temperature, stress, and strain as well as intensity and wavelength of exciting light. Based on the analysis of experimental results a physical model is proposed for explaining the effect of photostimulated enhancement of dislocation glide.
