Abstract. - The authors present some methodological aspects and preliminary results of a research on natural hazards and disaster events in two mountainous districts of western french Alps, "Hautes-Alpes" and "Savoie". From historical documents preserved in several offices (among which the "Restauration des Terrains en Montagne" established late 19th century) a data-base including floods, snow-avalanches, landslides and mud-flows has been created. It records about 1 500 disaster events in "Hautes-Alpes", spreading from the middle-age to nowadays, and 1 400 events in Savoie for contemporary period. Then sociological and economical importance of natural hazards and disaster events are presented by two examples : the perception of risks shared by mayors and deputies of the Hautes-Alpes district and the cost evaluation of the 1987 July and August flood disasters in Pralognan (Savoie).
