The use of the thermal pulsing technique to obtain information about the spatial distribution of real charge and permanent polarization in insulators is discussed. A summary is presented of results which have been obtained to date using this method. A method is proposed for extending the resolution of the technique by using it in conjunction with sequential removal of layers from the surface of the insulator.
