Does the combined use of temporary pacing wires and abciximab increase the risk of right ventricular perforation during complex coronary angioplasty?
The combined use of temporary pacing wires and IIb/IIIa receptor antagonists like abciximab during complex PCI may increase the risk of right ventricular perforation and cardiac tamponade.
Case of RV perforation with pacing wire plus abciximab warrants caution in complex PCI; leaves open causal association, needing prospective confirmation.
We describe our recent experience of right ventricular perforation leading to cardiac tamponade associated with a complex coronary angioplasty in which abciximab and a temporary pacing wire were used. This is to highlight the possibility that the combined use of temporary pacing wires and the IIb/IIIa receptor antagonists may be associated with an increased risk of this serious complication.
