Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has received particular attention over the past two decades due to its promising role in the treatment of mental disorders. As DBS has grown in popularity, ethical concerns have been raised. These concerns are related, among other issues, to the putative risk of personality changes associated with DBS treatment, to the relatively unknown long-term effects of DBS., and to potential implications of DBS with respect to autonomy and free will. This narrative review focuses on the ethical aspects of DBS, both respect to its current clinical use and its potential future uses.
