The refractive index has been measured by the method of minimum deviation on single crystals of Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 and Gd 1.5 Y 1.5 Fe 5 O 12 . The index was found to be 2.168 ± 0.003 at 3.0 μm with a variation of the order of 5% between 1 and 6 μm. It is concluded that the Faraday rotation should vary in sympathy with the index in this region.
