A recently obtained approximate variational solution of the Thomas–Fermi (TF) equation is used for the calculation of the total cross section of coherent elastic scattering of x rays by the noble-gas atoms. It is found that, apart from He and Ne, the calculated cross sections in the 1–1000 keV range agree within a few percent with the quantum-mechanical values.
