BRISSAUD Catherine - The agreement of the past participle with avoir according to linguistic and sociological variables. This paper bears on one of the emblems of normativity: the past participle used with "avoir" as experienced by secondary school pupils. First, the linguistic problem is reviewed. Then, the results of a test given to 1 269 pupils aged 10 to 15 are examined. The analysis of their mistakes allows us to highlight the importance of morphosyntactical structures, which play an important part in the production of errors in highschool. Analyses of variance were performed, showing the effects of age, sex, number of years of school and socio-cultural home environment on pupils' spelling.
