In Brief The most difficult time to retain staff nurses can be the first year after hire. Because of the high costs of recruitment and orientation, retention of these new employees is essential. Mentoring also provides professional growth benefits that appeal to existing employees and increase their job enjoyment and satisfaction. The author describes a mentoring program for new and existing employees that can be implemented with all levels and with many job types.
