The simple molecular separator described here is all of glass except for a silicone rubber membrane. It is heated and, if necessary, temperature-programmed in the same oven as the column, and it requires no auxiliary pumping. Satisfactory mass spectra have been obtained from its use with a wide range of compounds, and the gas effluent from the separator may be used to monitor the gas-chromatographic performance with a conventional detector.
