Methyl radicals have been produced by the photolysis of acetone at 200 °C and their reaction with nitric oxide has been studied. The reaction CH 3 + NO + M → CH 3 NO + M is shown to be third order with a rate constant of 8.8 × 10 − 31 cm 6 molecule −2 sec −1 , with acetone as M. It is further shown that the nitrosomethane formed reacts with either methyl radicals or nitric oxide. The probability of reactions such as CH 3 CO + NO → CH 3 CO • NO taking place is shown.
