Experimental study demonstrates a 30° H-plane pattern scan in a magnetized ferrite-overlay microstrip antenna, indicating a compact method for electronic beam steering.
Measured results are given for a novel microstrip antenna with in-built pattern control capabilities. The antenna element consists of a metal patch etched onto alumina substrate with a thick ferrite overlay, which is then magnetised by a permanent magnet, H-plane patterns showing a 30° scan are given and a simple analysis of this new device explains the principal mechanisms involved.
