The analytic theory of resonant absorption developed by Piliya (1966) is reviewed to resolve the discrepancy with numerical calculations. The equivalence of this approach with an alternative one by Hirsch and Shmoys (1965) is demonstrated. It is shown by numerical evaluation that provided exact solutions of the complementary functions are used, the analytic theory yields results in excellent agreement with numerical calculations.
