The interaction of low-initial-β hydrogen and argon plasmas with a fast rising magnetic piston [Ḃ(0) = 1.4×1010 G/sec] has been studied in a θ-pinch geometry. Doppler broadened and shifted line emission of ions and fast charge-exchange neutrals is used to determine the plasma dynamics. High Mach number flow (MA≥6) diffusion, and strong ion heating are observed. In addition, large Doppler shifted intensities indicate that ion reflection from the magnetic piston occurs giving velocities up to twice the piston velocity.
