The low frequency, rotational oscillation present in a reflex arc at low gas pressures and low magnetic fields is studied experimentally, with especial use made of correlation techniques. Several new results are obtained: (1) the oscillation frequency and its dependence upon the discharge parameters is shown to be in agreement with the predictions of linearized theory. This result, together with those of previous works, strengthens the identification of the mode as the 'E*B instability'. (2) The radial transport of electrons due to E*B drifts is obtained directly from the density-potential cross correlation function rather than estimated from the oscillation amplitudes.
