2 experiments were conducted, involving individual and serial list presentation of Stroop stimuli, to provide a critical test of the response competition hypothesis, and some response processes which have been attributed to the color-word interference phenomenon. It was found that interference in the naming of colors could be generated by congruous, as well as incongruous, color-word stimulus combinations. The experimental results supported the traditional notion of competition between two responses for a single response channel.
