This article presents significant findings from descriptive, psychodynamic, and developmental research and a recent study supporting the existence of a strong positive relationship between substance abuse and the characterological/personality disorders and/or "disorders of the self." Fifty alcoholics/addicts were assessed utilizing the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) 3 to 5 days prior to discharge from an inpatient chemcial dependency unit. Results indicated that 50 to 70% of the subjects were likely suffering from comorbid "disorders of the self." Implications of the findings are discussed and treatment suggestions offered including increased emphasis on spirituality, individual psychotherapy, and matching of treatment to patient needs.
