A satellite measurement of a transverse magnetic disturbance in the auroral oval is presented and analyzed in terms of field-aligned currents. The data are found to fit qualitatively a two-sheet current model proposed by R. Bostrom. Current flows into the ionosphere along the higher-latitude sheet and out along the lower-latitude sheet; densities of 8.72× 0−6 and 8.72×10−5 amp/m² are required, respectively, to produce the observed magnetic disturbance.
