Analysis of data gathered from university student political organizations representing the far left and far right suggests that leftist students come predominantly from upper-middle-class backgrounds, while those on the political right are more likely to be lower-middle-class or working-class in origin. These findings are interpreted using the status politics theory of Hofstadter, Lipset, and others.
