The recent outpouring of works celebrating the Japanese miracle is impressive indeed. The continuing Japanese success in the face of the stagnant world economy only fuels efforts to unravel the secrets of the miracle. A striking fact, however, is that most books seem to tell us more about ourselves than about Japan. The prescriptive nature of these tracts reveals pressing concerns about American society.
