The kanamycin-resistance transposon Tn903 (Nomura et al. 1978) was first identified as a constituent of the F-like R plasmid R6 (Sharp et al. 1973) and is a component of the cloning vector pML21 (Hershfield et al. 1976). It is one of the class of prokaryotic transposable elements that generate duplication of a 9-bp host sequence upon integration (Oka et al. 1978; for reviews, see Grindley 1979; Starlinger 1980; Calos and Miller 1980). Tn903 contains a 1000-bp unique region flanked by a pair of inverted-repeat sequences of 1050 bp. This structure is characteristic of many of the transposons that generate 9-bp repeats, e.g., Tn5, Tn10, and Tn1681 (Berg et al. 1975; Kleckner et al. 1975; So et al. 1979).
