Implication

Low adherence signals need for targeted support addressing literacy, income, and activity in similar settings; leaves open generalizability and causality without prospective data.

Structured PICO

P
Population
172 adult hypertensive patients attending the chronic care department for hypertension care at least for one year on an out-patient basis at Nedjo General Hospital in West Ethiopia. Mean age 51.5 years, 55.8% female.
O
Outcome
Non-adherence to antihypertensive medications measured using the 8-item Morisky medication adherence scalepatient reported

Adherence to antihypertensive medications is low (31.4%) in this Ethiopian cohort, driven by factors such as illiteracy, low income, physical inactivity, and knowledge deficit.

Limitations

  • Conducted only in government District Hospitals in Nedjo Town and did not include patients who attended private Hospitals
  • Self-reporting was used for measuring adherence, which has disadvantages of recall bias and eliciting only socially acceptable responses
