The chlorococcalean alga Trebouxia erici possesses numerous granular inclusions when grown in media of normal phosphate concentration, and few granular inclusions in media of low phosphate concentration. The granules stain metachromatically with toluidine blue and precipitate lead sulfide, indicative of linear polyphosphate. Their image varies with fixation for electron microscopy.
