Floor samples from an underground limestone mine in Kansas City were studied to determine the susceptibility of the shale to expansion by formation of gypsum. A simplified laboratory consolidometer approach was initiated to give insight into possible preventative measures. Calculations of possible heaving pressures indicate that rock bolting may be a viable method to control expansion.
