The title compound (Phen* =phenanthroline derivative) contains the magic number of 309 Pt atoms. In contrast to one-, two-, and five-shell clusters, four-shell clusters were previously unknown. Thus, the preparation of 1 helps bridge the gap between complexes and bulk metals. The Pt atoms in 1, like those in metallic platinum, display cubic close packing. The computer-simulated image on the right shows an M309 cluster viewed in the [110] direction.
