Students’ motives for pursuing doctoral degrees in counselor education

Doctoral students (N = 135) in counselor education and supervision (CES) programs provided survey data about their motives for pursuing doctoral degrees in CES and the criteria used for selecting their current programs. Students enrolled at public universities were more likely to pursue doctoral degrees in CES for postdegree careers as school counselors, and there were several associations between students’ career intentions and the criteria used in selecting their current programs. Implications for counselor education programs are presented.
