R100.1 is a self-transmissible plasmid that confers multiple drug resistance on its host cell. It is composite, with two functionally distinct parts: genes coding for resistance to several antibacterial drugs are located in a region, about 20 kb long, known as the r-determinant (r-det); genes responsible for sexual transfer, autonomous replication, incompatibility, and resistance to tetracycline are located in a region 73 kb long called the resistance transfer factor (RTF).
