A solution-based epitaxial route to prepare nickel-sheathed copper nanowires has been developed. Being essentially single-crystalline, the nickel phase in the resultant composite Cu@Ni nanowires exhibits a significant enhancement in coercivity at room temperature. With the assistance of ferromagnetic nickel, diamagnetic copper nanowires become magnetically responsive to an applied magnetic field.
