To evaluate whole torso motion, lumbar motion restriction, and subjective comfort across three lumbar orthoses during activities of daily living following spinal fusion.
Randomized crossover study testing 12 subjects 3 months post-lumbar surgical arthrodesis under four conditions: Boston anterior opening, Aspen lumbosacral, Cybertech, and no orthosis.
Lumbar motion was tracked using a skin-mounted Lordosimeter strain-gauge device, muscular effort via surface electromyography during flexion/extension, and comfort via a visual analog scale.
Relative to the no-orthosis condition, total lumbar motion was restricted to 81% for Aspen and 79% for Boston, while Cybertech permitted 97% motion and did not differ significantly from no orthosis.
Aspen was rated significantly more comfortable than Boston and Cybertech, with mean visual analog scale scores of 2.24 versus 4.12 and 3.92, respectively (0 = very comfortable, 10 = very uncomfortable).
Surface electromyography measurements of trunk muscle effort demonstrated no significant differences between the three orthoses during flexion and extension tasks.
