Earthquake‐uplifted beach ridges around the west Wellington coast are correlated and the beach ridge uplifted by the Haowhenua earthquake of Maori tradition ( c. 500 years ago) is identified. A Maori plaggen soil is overlain by the beach ridge and is thought to be older than the Haowhenua earthquake. Moa‐hunter sites are above or seawards of the beach ridge and are thought to be younger than the earthquake.
