It is suggested that a very energetic (>10 MV) electron beam can be used for efficient compression, provided its energy is properly programmed. The optimal voltage shape was found numerically for boron spheres, and was compared with that derived from the theory of homogeneous isentropic compression. Shaping improves the compression ratio by a factor of 7 as compared to that attained by a constant voltage pulse.
