It is nearly fifteen years since Whitehead published his comprehensive and authoritative book Dielectric Breakdown in Solid Insulation . At that time it was believed that each solid homogeneous dielectric possessed an intrinsic electric strength which was a physical constant of the substance, adequately accounted for by existing theories. Recent work has demonstrated the optimistic nature of this belief, and an account is given in this article of the present state of knowledge.
