Viscometers with long-flared transitions from capillary to bulb show very small effects arising from the inertia terms in the equations of fluid motion. A method for calculating the non-linear (inertial) effects is described and applied to typical tubes. An optimal tube shape giving zero non-linear effects in the present theoretical scheme is described. The range of applicability of the theory in terms of Reynolds numbers is discussed. Within this range comparison with available viscometric data is reasonable.
