Conditions influencing development of colour in the alkaline phenol/hypochlorite method for determination of ammonia are discussed. The reaction is applied to the determination of nitrogen in digests of feed and faeces samples, using the AutoAnalyzer. Results agree closely with those obtained by distillation and titration.
