The possibilities of using modern physical instruments in colour control and formulation are discussed, with specific reference to filter colorimeters, spectrophotometers, and high‐speed electronic digital computers. It is shown that visual assessments can be used to calibrate colorimeters, so that measurements of small colour differences may be expressed in colourist's terminology. An electronic computer has been programmed, to enable rapid colour‐matching calculations to be carried out. The applications and implications of this method are discussed.
