Three 30-day bioassays were conducted using alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS) formulations as the toxic agent. Duplicate groups of 10 bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus) were exposed to a series of concentrations in a continuously renewed solution. The 30-day median tolerance limit (TLm) ranged between 15.5 and 18.3 p.p.m. of active ingredient. The difference between the 24-hour and the 30-day TLm ranged between 6.5 and 0.5 p.p.m. Subsequent to exposure, swimming performance tests and histological procedures were conducted on the test fish. A reduction of growth rate in one test and histological changes in all tests were evident at concentrations approximately one-third of the TLm value. Tests of swimming performance were negative. Test fish exhibited some degree of acclimation to ABS after exposure to sub-lethal concentrations.
