Remarkable ability for self-recognition is displayed when a mixture of three different bis(catecholamide) ligands is allowed to react at room temperature with [Ga(acac)3] and KOH in methanol (schematic representation below). These rigid, rodlike ligands differing only in the distance between the two coordination sites form M2L3 triple helical complexes containing only one type of ligand with the trivalent metal ions M.
