Whitepaper reveals a novel architecture increasing visibility in legacy OT networks, suggesting safer cyber integration.
This whitepaper introduces Deterministic Out-of-Band (OOB) Context Binding, a novel architecture designed to resolve the critical cyber-physical visibility gap between IT enterprise microservices and legacy Operational Technology (OT) networks. While cloud-native IT environments rely on distributed tracing standards like W3C Trace Context (traceparent) to maintain end-to-end visibility, extending this telemetry to legacy industrial control protocols (e.g., IEEE 1815 DNP3, Modbus TCP) presents a fundamental architectural barrier. Legacy OT protocols feature rigid binary frame structures. In-band payload mutation (injecting trace IDs directly into network packets) triggers checksum failures and causes physical controllers (RTUs/IEDs) to crash, introducing severe availability risks to physical infrastructure. To safely bridge this gap, this research proposes a decoupled architecture that correlates IT application context to binary OT physical control commands with 0.0% payload mutation. By pre-registering an active W3C Traceparent against a short-lived (TTL=5s) deterministic composite hash key (SHA256(src_ip:dst_ip:dst_port:function_code)) in an OOB Key-Value Store, and utilizing passive network sensors combined with kernel-level eBPF (XDP) Vanguard hooks, the system successfully stitches cross-boundary attack contexts without altering a single byte of network traffic. Key Highlights: Zero Operational Risk: 0.0% payload mutation and 0.00000 ms physical wire latency overhead, ensuring 100% compliance with legacy RTUs and operational control loops. High-Performance eBPF Vanguard Mode: Achieves 100.0% context stitching success at 100,000+ packets per second (pps) with ~0.015 ms capture latency and zero memory leaks. Security AI Integration: Transforms isolated DNP3 binary commands into rich OTLP "Fat Spans," enabling Security LLMs and SOC platforms to automatically trace cyber kill chains from IT jump server compromises down to physical breaker operations.
