Growth factor gene therapy (VEGF-C or VEGF-D) coupled with lymph node transfer successfully repairs damaged lymphatic networks and improves drainage in a large animal model of lymphedema.
Lähteenvuo et al. (2011) studied Limb lymphedema (n=19). Autologous lymph node transfer combined with adenoviral VEGF-C or VEGF-D vs. AdLacZ (β-galactosidase) was evaluated on Lymphatic drainage and growth of new lymphatic vessels. Autologous lymph node transfer combined with adenoviral VEGF-C or VEGF-D significantly improved postoperative lymphatic drainage and induced robust growth of new lymphatic vessels compared with controls.
