This article presents a methodology to estimate tourism expenditures associated with open-access events. The methodology relies primarily on participant-supplied information, so it is best used for events for which it can be assumed that most tourist spectators are closely associated with participants. An application of the methodology to the 1995 Show-Me State Games lends support to the hypothesis that this is an appropriate assumption for amateur sports events.
