It is shown by numerical solution of Maxwell's equations that, for a given wavelength, the degree of confinement of the electromagnetic field to the core of a graded-index, single-mode, optical-fiber can be optimized by the proper choice of the radial variation of the index. Such confinement of the energy to the core kelps alleviate lass. The fibers considered have zero total dispersion bandwidths in excess of 100 GHz · Km, at wavelengths between 1.3 μm and 1.55 μm.
