The time-dependent Bragg diffraction by a lossy standing ultrasonic wave has been calculated, emphasizing the effect of acoustic attenuation upon the modulation depth. The effects of acoustic attenuation upon the performance of acousto-optic demultiplexing and multiplexing devices are also discussed. Optical demultiplexing of two simulated 37.5-Mbits/sec PCM channels using a PbMoO4 standing ultrasonic Bragg cell is demonstrated. The performance of the demultiplexer was found to be independent of the polarization of the incident light. Other salient features of the device are discussed.
