A calculation of the characteristics of the Bragg scattering of near-infrared laser light (1.15μ wavelength) from coherent spin waves in ytrrium iron garnet is presented. Previously available experimental data on Faraday rotation is used to determine the magneto-optic coefficient. The calculation is then made by considering the spin wave as a source of a spatially varying index of refraction. The ratio of scattered power to incident power for a saturated spin-wave beam of π-mm2 cross section is calculated to be −63 dB at a spin-wave frequency of approximately 1 GHz.
