The study of thermoplastic materials has stimulated fruitful interactions between chemists, physicists, engineers, and biologists. A broad interdisciplinary community involving all these areas of science has emerged over the last 30 years, and with it our knowledge of themoplastic materials has grown considerably with the active investigations of supramolecular assemblies of designed organic molecules, polymers, films, and membranes, among others. This review provides a structural overview of these synthetic thermoplastic polymers and discusses their physicochemical characteristics, structure-property relationships, applications, and limitations. It is the authors' intention to provide a thorough overview of the synthetic vinyl polymer classes available.
