The effects of γ‐ray irradiation upon the internal friction and Young's modulus of copper have been measured in the temperature range from 81 to 241 °K. It is found that there exists a pronounced minimum in the rate at which defects arrive at dislocations in the vicinity of 170 to 180 °K. This minimum is discussed and its significance in terms of the two predominant radiation damage models is considered.
