The 2 700 Å absorption bands found by Thrush in the flash photolysis of HN 3 have been studied at high resolution. The rotational fine structure of the strongest band has been analyzed, and it has been shown that the bands arise from a [Formula: see text] transition of the N 3 molecule. The bond distance in the ground state of N 3 is found to be 1.181 Å.
