Recent laboratory results on the excitation of the Herzberg and atmospheric bands of molecular oxygen are summarized and used to show that simple recombination of atomic oxygen is incapable of producing the observed airglow intensities of these band systems. It is suggested that the energy stored as dissociated oxygen is abstracted through reactions catalyzed by a minor constituent of the upper atmosphere.
