Milne (1947) mentioned the occurrence of calcareous termite mounds in an area of noncalcareous soils. He suggested that the calcium carbonate accumulated in the mound either (a) by upward capillary movement of ground water containing calcium bicarbonate or (b) from organic matter brought into the mounds by termites. The purpose of this paper is to investigate Milne's hypothesis of water movement in termite mounds by means of a radioactive tracer.
