A novel structural modelling technique for ECG representation based on myocardium action potentials overcomes limitations of existing methods.
A new technique is described for the modelling and representation of electrocardiograms (ECGs) in terms of the myocardium action potential. Most of the existing representation techniques suffer from some limitations and constraints as indicated in the text. The mathematical representation of the ECG is derived on the basis of structural modelling techniques, and is used to describe normal as well as abnormal cases. The structured representation may be variable or fixed: depending on whether or not the P, Q, R, S and T waves are separable. For variable-structure representation (VSR) the ECG generator is represented by a discrete second-order system with varying structure, that is to say, the system parameters are readjusted according to a prespecified scenario which is timed with the input. The proposed representation does not suffer from the limitations of other techniques. Computer-generated simulations illustrating many of the results are presented.
